Dressin' Up- Before and After

I take in used furniture the way some people take in stray animals. I wash them up, give them some love and find a place in my home for them.

I've put my husband on strict orders to not let me wind up on an episode of Hoarders due to my need to save every piece of furniture I find. I am especially a sucker for solid wood anything, crates, pallets, stray boards, you name it. If it has good bones, I'm in!

The old dresser in the hubs' and my room was getting pretty sad. I use things and fix things until they just can't take it anymore. The dresser couldn't take it anymore. It was a hand-me down, of a hand-me down, of a hand-me down, if you get my drift, and since it was made of cheap particle board, it's time had definitely come.

Luckily for me, my sister stumbled upon a woman in our hometown, purging her home of all the extra dressers she had from when her kids were growing up. They were free on the condition that we get them out of her house!

I was happy to oblige. Actually my sister did the picking up, thanks sister!

After my sister picked it up for me, she set it outside at her house in the country till I was able to get there, unfortunately a rain storm beat me there.

Poor baby.

The old dresser waited for me though and the next time my sister came my direction, she ~~begrudgingly~~ lovingly hauled the dresser with her.

It was then left out in my garbage, which probably was a good thing, because the previous owners were smokers.

Anyways this is what she looked like when I finally got her in the house. She needed some lovin'. I feel like it was a she, just look at the flirty little wave on the bottom!

Side note; yes,the picture were taken on my iPad. Someday I swear I'll get around to taking better photos!

Yes, she needed some help.

But it wasn't anything a good sanding, and a couple of drops of wood glue couldn't help.

So I took a damp washcloth and started wiping it down. I have no idea what they had used to paint or stain her with, but look at the rag after I had wiped her down with just water!

Seriously that was some red stuff!

But I cleaned and glued and sanded and primed and painted and TADA! Here is she all fancied up! She makes me proud! I think we'll keep her.

Did I mention the drawers are HUGE?! All of the clothes from the old dresser fit with room to spare. A definite bonus, guess I'll have to buy more to fill her up.

Yep, she was definitely worth the work!

I was cleaning today, which gave me time to think, and thinking always leads me here. The house is 'weekend messy', so decided to clean my floors, because The Nester says if your floors are clean the rest of the house feels clean too, even if it isn’t. I have found that it is pretty good advice, so when everything else feels chaotic, I clean the floors. Of course for me, cleaning the floors also means picking up the toys, shoes, clothes, etc. so that I can even begin to vacuum, which naturally leads to a cleaner home as well. One of my favorite stores, West Elm, has now opened a special section called The Market. It specializes in kitchen, garden and personal care. Lets just say I am in love. If I had unlimited resources to spend in one store to do a total overhaul on my house, it would be West Elm, and now with the new Market, I am in lust too. So here are a few of my favorites. Check it out and maybe you'll get some great Christmas ideas for someone on your list. Or maybe my hubby will see this and get a great idea for me! Hint, hint! Enjoy! Incredibly large, amazing cutting board . I've seen these boards doubling as art hanging on the wall, then they take up no storage space! Cast iron Dutch oven . Great for one-pot meals. These glass jars come in varying sizes. I'm thinking they would work well for brown sugar with that rubber seal. I would definitely get plenty of use out of a cheese knife set during the holidays and all year round. Copper measuring spoons . Seriously? Fantastic

Happy Fall- Time to Slow Down

I've been busy following several blogs. They have such beautiful homes and are great inspirations. Sometimes I get carried away thinking that blog homes and magazine homes look that perfect every minute of every day. It's hard to remember that often the photos shown are there for inspiration and are only slices of a moment caught on camera. Pictures do not necessarily tell the story of true everyday life. Rachel Martin's blog, Finding Joy ,has got me thinking about taking the time to look for the spaces in my home that make me happy and inspire me. I need to focus on those places more, and less on the toys all over the living room floor or the messes on the counter that need to be put away.
