I'll Tell Ya What I Want, What I Really Really Want

I woke up with the Spice Girls in my head, what can I say?

Moving on.

I am list making kind of girl.

I like making lists and checking things off. I've even been known to create a list that includes things I've already done so I can cross something off and feel good about myself.

You've done that too, right?

As I washed dishes the other day, I was thinking about my must haves for the new house.

It is list making time.

Here's what on my major, must have list!

1. Storage. I like smaller homes, they're cozy, quaint, warm. The less house there is, the less square footage to clean, (bonus!) but an absolute must is TONS of storage.

2. Character. I must have character. I am drawn to older homes, so with this new build I really want to bring in details like chair railing, wainscoting, and vintage or repurposed decor.

3. Wood floors. I want real, solid, hardwood floors more than I can even explain. I know that this may be out of my price range though, so if it comes down to it, I am willing to go with a cheaper flooring option now and upgrade later since this will be our forever home.

Then again since its our forever home, maybe I should just invest the money... Hmmm see, I'm still pretty torn on this.

4. Natural light. I adore bright airy rooms with plenty of windows. I love natural light, it just makes me feel happy sitting in a room full of sunshine. The Hub's, on the other hand, despises bright rooms, it actually bothers his eyes, (for reals) so good shades or curtains are a must as well.

5. A large mudroom/washroom. We live on a ranch, with mud, dirt, and endless messes being drug into the house, so a separate room to kick off sh*# covered boots (sorry Mom, that what they're covered in, love you) coveralls, coats etc. is an absolute must!

6. A fireplace. I don't know yet if I'll go with wood burning or gas, but a fireplace is on the have-to-have list!

7. A front porch, with a swing, where I will sit and drink tea and grow old. Its a non-negotiable. Hey, it's my dream item, what can I say?

How does that list sound? There are plenty of things I would add for a dream scenario, but for the basic build it and grow with it plan, I think these are reasonable.

It's still snowing and blowing here. I guess in between trips outdoors to help the Hubs shovel out feed bunks and making calf bottles to get the babies through the blizzard, I'll have plenty of time to think about my list!

How about you? What is on your list of must haves or dream house items?

Have a great day!

P.S. Storage like this makes me swoon!

  1. Hmmm. Let's see, my must haves would include a maid, a cook, a gardener, chauffeur, personal shopper, a nurse, and personal trainer. Actually the only decision I have left is which room we want at Regency Assisted Living. :-)

Changes

I was cleaning today, which gave me time to think, and thinking always leads me here. The house is 'weekend messy', so decided to clean my floors, because The Nester says if your floors are clean the rest of the house feels clean too, even if it isn’t.  I have found that it is pretty good advice, so when everything else feels chaotic, I clean the floors. Of course for me, cleaning the floors also means picking up the toys, shoes, clothes, etc. so that I can even begin to vacuum, which naturally leads to a cleaner home as well.  While cleaning up I began to think about how this blog has evolved over the years, from a desire to write like The Nester about home, into what it is now.  I started writing this blog when I was dreaming of building a new home. Then plans changed, life took turns, and we ended up in a home so different than I expected and so perfect for our family. Somewhere along the way I realized that home wasn’t in the walls that went up or in ...

The Farmer

I trust that, by now, you have all seen the commercial heard round the world. You know, the one that stopped all action and silenced a nation when the soft rumble of that voice drifted into living rooms on a Super Bowl Sunday. Yes that commercial . Paul Harvey's voice, unmistakable in its sincerity and beauty, spoke of a people whom work from sun up till sun down with no recognition. He spoke of a people whom care for their baby animals and pour their blood, sweat and tears into helping them grow. He spoke of a people, so foreign to many in the world today. He spoke of a people whom many have forgotten. He spoke of a people; my people. The farmer. I am a fourth generation farmer married to a fourth generation farmer. Together we are raising the fifth generation. We don't do it because its easy, it's not. The hours my husband spends working rival that of any doctor or lawyer I have ever met. We don't do it because it's profitable, some years it...

Ordinary Magic

I am still here. Despite all the challenges of the past year, you are reading this and I am writing it, so we we made it. I won't even try to wrap up what we have all been through, I am just going to acknowledge we all lived and processed through the past year by whatever means necessary.  As I look back on it, it's crazy to think how much fear and heartache the last year held but also how much joy and ordinary life as well.  It's been quiet here on the blog as some of you have noticed and checked in on me. The quiet gave way to the most exciting thing though, I am now a published author, along with some incredible friends! The devotional, Lighthouse Collections— Beacons of Light in Life's Storms, is a work of passion and prayers. My dear friend Megan Miller contacted me last year about contributing to a devotional and I was thrilled to be included. Between going back to school for my Masters degree and writing for the devotional, I had not found the time or the words t...
